Tropical Birds: First Grade

 

One of my good friends and collegeaus illustrated this book and I decided to use it as inspiration for a first grade project. After reading Bella's Story we discussed line and reviewed the color wheel. We painted a 12x18in paper with the primary colors to create secondary colors using line for the designs. The students then chose from some stencils I created to trace the different parts of the bird on the back of their paper. They cut and then glued the bird together, adding Googly eyes and extra feathers where they wanted! One of my favorites, ever!

Color Wheel Mandalas

I always like to start out the year with a refresher on color. It is crucial that students understand how to mix color for the rest of the year, and about 85% of my classes forget color mixing over the summer.

For ArtII I didn't want to do a basic color wheel, so I decided to incorporate a mandala lesson. The inner circle is the basic color wheel, the middle circle is color plus black, and the outer circle is color plus white. So we discussed shades and tones, as well! They only used primary colors and black and white.

I think the results turned out beautiful, but it did take a lot of individual explanations.

Hybrid Logos

My art II students did this as a short graphic design project. It took them about two 1.5 hr classes to do the whole thing. They had to come up with 3 sketches combining 3 current famous logos to create a new "hybrid."
